What Is An Inside Team Volunteer?
Being a Jubilee Inside Team Volunteer is one of the most impactful and personally rewarding mission opportunities anywhere. If you ask a veteran volunteer what it is like, most will probably tell you two things: (1) it was a life-changing experience for them and (2) you have to experience it to really understand. So rather than try to explain it all here, we will instead focus on the basics.
You will be inside the unit all day during the Jubilee Weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday ~7AM - 6PM) and for a half-day on the following Saturday (8-12)
As a first time volunteer you will be a table family volunteer where you will be with two other free-world volunteers and six inmate participants. Your job is simple: talk less, listen more, love always without reservation. We are bringing God’s agape love to these incarcerated men and women.
All Jubilee inside teams are same-sex teams (i.e. women in the women’s units, men in the men’s units).
We will spend time together, eat together, sing together, hear some great talks, and maybe dance a little.
Every Jubilee Volunteer has the opportunity for a speaking part in the weekend (no obligation) and your volunteer weekend leader will discuss your assignment with you.
We have two team meetings, called preparation and spiritual formation retreats, that normally run 8-12 on two Saturdays. At these retreats you will learn all about your role, how to operate in prison, and get to know your fellow volunteers.
Following the Jubilee Weekend, we will return once a month for a 2 hour reunion at the unit. You are not expected to make it every month, but you are committing to make at least one to two reunions in the six months following the weekend.
Your role as a volunteer will be life-changing for you and also for the inmates you are meeting. We take our commitment to these men and women seriously. We are doing this for the Lord. Please review our Personal Commitment Checklist and make sure you can commit to this before registering.
